|Vintage 1980 Sonex 180 Custom
2x DiMarzio Super Distortion
Neck Made in Japan!!!
Here is a great-sounding Sonex 180 Custom from 1980, and to my knowledge is the only guitar Gibson ever put out with a MIJ neck. They only did this in 1980, so it it is probably farmed out to the Matsumoku factory, who were already making the superior-quality Epiphone thinlines for Gibson at the same time. According to Gruhn, by 1981 the Sonex Custom was back to USA necks.
Aside from that little-known piece of trivia, this guitar is killer!! It is player's grade, with some finish chips on the neck, but it is oveall pretty clean, and it plays and sounds great, and the DiMarzio DSDs sound fantastic in this guitar, and even the coil-splits sound great.
This is a 1980s Rock Machine!!!
The Resinwood concept design is widely panned as a Norlin misadventure, but the design was found at the time to be a sustain machine, and they have it tested to show the increased sustain is verifiable by scientific method. I'm here to tell you that you can hear the increased sustain with your own ears as well, and this really does sustain and sing longer than wood, and does not have the lack of sustain in certain dead notes that even the best Gibsons occasionally suffer from.
All in all, a great-sounding guitar with some vintage Gibson vibe, and some 1980s Norlin funkyness, ebony board, but for rock and most other related genres, this guitar kills --and even the strat-like tones on this guitar are very convincing in the split-coil mode. This guitar comes with an aftermarket gig bag, and will be expertly packed.
