VINTAGE -- Neumann KM88 Multi-Pattern

The Holy Grail of Acoustic Instrument Mics

Made With Nickel Capsules!!!

Neumann KM88

Up for consideration is a vintage Neumann KM83 multi-pattern condenser microphone. These mics are highly coveted for acoustic instruments, especially guitar, and overheads. You will find these mics in widespread use in many the world's top recording studios. Newumann no longer makes a Multi-Pattern SDC, and the 3-pattern Schoeps CMC66 sells for $2850, so here is a great chance to get a vintage KM-88 multi-pattern SDC, and not even have to pay a premium!!!

CONDITION
This mic is in excellent condition for almost 40 or so years of service, with just a few minor scratches from normal use. Click here for 1270 DPI Hi-Res Photos. The the pattern switch works perfectly, and the pad also works fine. The capsules sit in their capsule housing a degree or 2 off-center, but otherwise everything looks and sounds great, and works just fine. These mics were made back when the KK56 nickel capsules were still available, and so this mic became the FET sucessor to the famous multi-pattern KM-56 tube mic, using the exact same capsules in a 48-volt phantom powered FET design.

These mics really do sound wonderful, with low self-noise, excellent bass, and beautifuly even response. I used them briefly for tracking Classical Harp Guitar, and they sounds warm, detailed and very musical. These make for a very flrexible mic, as the excell in all three patterns. They would make a great side or center channel for M/S recording, and you can get in closer using omni than you can with the cardioid. It is really flexible to have all 3 patterns in one microphone. I really don't want to sell this, but must do so to pay for some other vintage gear.

SOUND FILES:
Here are some quick, 1-take MP3 sound files showing how each pattern sounds through a Presonus ADL 600 preamp into a Rosetta 200 A/D converter. No EQ or effects, except for a little reverb on the KM88 Jingle.
