Vintage
Neumann U87i
Up for consideration is a very nice vintage 1969 Neumann U87i multi-pattern condenser
microphone. The classic U87 mics are highly coveted for pro studios because they sound great on everything, take EQ well, and have a polished, well-recognized "like a record" sound. Also, the vintage models have a smoother sound and less of the midgange honk of the newer models. You will find these mics still in
widespread use in all the great recording studios, like Abbey
Road, where they currently have 28 of them!!! Lately, the vintage battery-powered U87s have climbed to the price level of the new ones, so here is a rare chance to get a nice vintage 87i in excellent condition from 1969, and still save $700 off the price of a new one!!!

U87I CONDITION
This vintage mic is in very good condition, with some small dings and scratches from
44 years of professional studio use, primarily by the same owner since 1980. Click HERE for 1270 Hi-Res photos of this mic. The pad and roll-off switches function perfectly, and the 2 plastic pins on the roll-off/pad switch are intact. The mic can be powered by two 22.5 volt batteries, and the battery level indicator meter still works fine.
OLD OR NEW
There is much debate over the differences between the old U87i and the new U87Ai. Many prefer the older design for its warmth and richness, and great headroom. I prefer them, especially the early versions, as they sound smoother to me than the later U87Ai mics, and for me are closer to the sound of the U67, the mic it was replacing in the Neumann catalog. Here is a video comparison of the 2 mics from Recording Hacks, and here is a audio shootout of the 2 from Gearslutz. Here is some info from the Neumann website [ 1 | 2 | 3 ]
