Up for consideration is a beautiful Ramirez 1a 10-string guitar with a cedar top and East Indian Rosewood back and sides. This guitar was made by Ramirez in 1972 as a 6-string 1a, and it has recently been converted to a 10-string guitar, along with an added BBand A2.2 dual channel pickup system. New, a Rameriz 1a 10-string sells for over $14,000, so here is a very rare opportunity to get one in top playing condition, and save over $10,000 in the process!!!

SOUND
The guitar has the famous Ramirez sound, with great clarity, volume, excellent sustain and resonance, precise intonation, and nice, adjustable action. Here are some quick, 1-take MP3 sound files to give you an idea of what to expect. The guitar was recorded using various classic tube mics using to a Presonus ADL 600 mic preamp through a Rosetta 200 A/D converter to Logic. The sound is straight signal from the mic pre with no EQ or added effects.

CONDITION
This guitar is in excellent cosmetic condition, with a new 10-string neck, fingerboard, frets, bridge, and a new lacquer finish. There is one repaired crack on the back, and a few repaired dings on the top. I would say 9/10 overall. The bridge saddle now has about 5 mm of material, and can be lowered to suite your personal preference.

WARRANTY
The guitar is warranteed for 1 year for any structural problems that might occur (buyer pays shipping both ways). The bracing is exactly the same on the Rameriz 1a 10-strings and 6-strings, so the 1a design is perfect for the 10-string conversion. The luthier doing the conversions has built about 1,000 classical guitars in his carear, and we have now converted 6 guitars, and they all have been fantastic sounding, and structurally very stable.

STRINGS
I have the guitar tuned in Romantic tuning, a standard 10-string tuning where 1-6 is normal, and 7-10 descend step-wise: 7=D, 8=C, 9=B, 10 =A. Strings By Mail has a great selection of 10-string sets and can put together custom sets for you at a discount over individual strings. Several excellent string manufacturers offer 10-string sets, in cluding D'Addario, Hannabach, and Savarez. LaBella also makes a set but I do not recommend it.

RESOURCES

TEACHERS
If you need a teacher to help you adapt to the 10-string guitar, you can check this list here. CLASSICAL HARP GUITAR
This guitar type is also a relative of the Harp Guitar family known as the Fretted Harp Guitar. It has a big advantage over the other harp guitar types in that the frets extend across the entire neck, and the guitar can easily be played with a capo, and be quickly transposed into a variety of keys, which is especially helpful when accompanying singers. This is, of course, impossible on a regular harp guitar. Custom capos are made by Shubb (ask for the Pinnochio model), and also by Phill Elliott.
