* SOLD * 1998 Gibson Les Paul Junior Special w/P100s, Softshell Gig Bag * SOLD *
Rare Translucent Green Finish, w/Upgraded Gold Knobs
Nut Width: 1 11/16 (43 mm); Weight: 8 Lbs., 1 Oz.
Up for sale is a used 1998 Gibson Les Paul Junior Special -- in the rare translucent green finish -- with upgraded gold knobs, and a Gibson softshell case. The Gibson Les Paul Special guitars from this era came with P100s, which is what these PUPs are. The mahogany body looks to a very high-quality tonewood, 2-piece body, before they started splicing in multiple pieces of wood. These are still almost 1/2 the price of the new ones, so here is a great chance to get a cool LP Special in the rare translucent green finish at a great price.
The guitar has a very comfortable, medium 1 11/16th "D" profile, and the frets have lots of life on them. The P100s actually sound really good when played clean, as well as through pedal effects -- as long as you are not expecting the classic P90 distortion break-up sound. I have found that with a careful set up of these pickups, they can sound really good. They are not the PUPs you would want for metal or stadium rock, but for most other styles of music, they are really good. They are voiced to be bright like a P90, and I have the bridge PUP up high, and it sounds great.
Anyway, that said, these Specials are good modding platforms, as you can swap out the P100 for a Mini HB, P90, HB, Gold Foil -- so you really have lots of choices to customize your tone, with a really solid 1998 mahogany body. The guitar has some buckle rash on the back, and a few dings on the back edge at the bass side, but overall looks pretty clean. All in all, a great-playing and great-sounding guitar that hits all the right LP Special spots -- and looks great in Translucent Green.
