Up for consideration is a vintage ~1940 Epiphone Zephyr archtop guitar and soft case -- a vintage Epiphone version of the Gibson ES-350 (and also ES175), featuring an upgraded vintage Epi New York pickup. This is a great player's guitar in good condition, and is built to the highest standards of quality, due to the 20+ year rivalry between Gibson and Epiphone. As many people are now discovering, these Epiphone archtops always rival and often surpass their Gibson counterparts, but at prices that are much more affordable that what the Gibsons are currently selling for. For example a mid 50s ES-350 or 175 sells for around $4k, so here is a great opportunity to own one in good condition, and save about $3,000!!!

CLASSIC EPIPHONE SOUND
Zephyr have a great vintage archtop character and tone that imparts a roundess and open sound to your playing. The upgraded New York single-coil pickup has a wonderful sound that is perfectly matched to the archtop's electric voice. You can spend more on a guitar, but it doesn't get much better than this.

CONDITION / DATE
The Epi Zephyr is in good overall condition, and plays fine, sounds great. It has been refinished, and as a result the serial # is not 100% clear but it seems to be #3561, a 4-digit serial number from 1940. The lamination is really good, with straight grain spruce in the top layer, and I believe the later laminations used Maple. Also the fingerboard is dark, like it is ebony or Brazilian, and lastly the original pickup position was at the bridge, which is consistant with the 1939 -1941 placement. The Zephyr started as a high-end guitar in 1939 and morphed to a mid-level guitar by the late 40s, and this one has more of the high-end quality of tonewoods.
UPGRADES / REPAIRS
The Epi Zephyr looks like it still has the original bridge and the original tailpiece, but the original pickup has been moved from the bridge position to the neck position, and upgraded to a later vintage Epiphone New York pickup -- which is the best pickup Epiphone ever made. The tone pots and knobs are replacments, with the original pot holes plugged and filled. The picguard is a modern replacement, with a Vintage 1950s Epiphone "E" logo. The finish is not original, and is worn in several places, but the guitar still has some great mojo, and the acoustic sound is better that most every other laminated top archtop I have ever played. The Grover tuners are replacements, and the strap button is "custom."
