Up for consideration is a 1959 Gibson Es-225 electric mic and case, a totally modern upgrade to the classic 1PU original, powered by 3 Rio Grande Baby Dawgbucker PUs. This is a great original 1959 ES-225 that came with a single P90 in the center position, which made for a great playing guitar, but with no tonal flexibility. To reverse the situation, we have modded this vintage guitar with a trio of 4-conductor Rio Grande Dawgbuckers, which in my mind have the best split-coil sound of any 4-conductor Humbucker I have tried. In addition, we have wired them up to the new Stew Mac Free Way selector switch, which gives you 6 toggle positions, and unmatched tonal variety. New, Gibson has just announced the Historic Reissue of the 2PU 1959 ES-225 coming out in August for $3,299 each, so here is a rare opportunity to own a 1959 Vintage Original one in excellent condition, and save about $800!!!

CLASSIC 1959 GUITAR
1959 ES-225's have a great vintage character and tone comes from the wonderful workmanship and tonewoods from the Gibson factory in the late 50s. Also the 1959 neck profile is often copied, but rarely successfully. The idea here was to comvert the single PU ES225 into a guitar with great tonal variety -- turning a weakness of the stock guitar into a strength. We started with a set of Rio Grande Dawgbuckers, which are actually mini humbuckers in a P90 Dog Ear surround. The 4-Conductor Dawgbucker is a great PU -- with the best single-coil sound from any HB that I have heard. With 3x of these onboard, you can get a wide variety of tones, and we opted for the Stew Mac Free Way Switch, a 6-way PU selector switch that looks like a standard 3-way toggle, and has the 3 HB modes on the left side, and the inner 3 positions of a strat's 5-way switch on the right side of the switch. This was done using a custom schematic, drawn up for us by the switch's inventor!!! CLICK HERE for the guitar's wiring schematic. In addition, the Volume and Tone pots are now Push/Pull, and only operate in Position 5, for Middle PU humbucker/single coil mode, and then all 3 PU active/middle only. So in all, there are 8 different tonal varieties, all contolled by just 2 knobs: master volume and master tone.
ES225 SOUND CLIPS
A previous ES225 project convinced me on the merrits of using the Rio Grand pickups. HERE is a page showing that guitar with a few sound clips. The close proximity of the 3PUs to each other create a more subtle effect, with slight tonal shifts when switching positions, but the tonal versatility and control is excellent, and all 8 of the positions and splits sound amazing.
